Packaging Waste & Recycling Guidance

For professional users of ecorend products

If you have reached this page from an ecorend product label, Technical Data Sheet or product page, you will find practical guidance below on managing empty product packaging responsibly and in line with applicable UK business-waste requirements.

Important – Commercial Waste Only

Empty packaging from the professional use of an ecorend product must be managed through an appropriate commercial waste or recycling service. It must not be placed in a household waste or recycling bin, a public litter bin or any other domestic waste stream.

Strictly for Professional Use Only

This product is designed exclusively for use by professional tradespeople and businesses. It is not intended for sale to, or for use by household consumers. All empty packaging must be managed through an appropriate commercial waste or recycling service and must not be disposed of through domestic waste streams. This product is manufactured for intended use within the United Kingdom. If this product is used outside the United Kingdom, the end user must ensure that all packaging waste is disposed of in line with all relevant waste management regulations in the country of use.

How to manage empty ecorend packaging

  1. Use the product and check the packaging: Use the product as intended and follow the relevant Technical Data Sheet and Material Safety Data Sheet. Before placing packaging in a recycling stream, make sure it is empty and ask your commercial waste provider what level of residue it will accept. Packaging containing unused product, wet material or significant residue may need to be handled differently. Do not assume it can be recycled with empty packaging. Refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet and obtain advice from an authorised waste contractor where required.
  1. Separate and store it correctly: Keep empty packaging separate from unused product, general site waste and any waste that may contaminate it. Sort packaging by material where required by the rules that apply in your UK location or by your waste collector. Store it safely and securely until collection so that it cannot escape, cause pollution or become contaminated.
  1. Use a commercial waste or recycling service: Arrange collection through your site’s commercial waste service or another appropriately authorised waste contractor. Confirm that the service accepts the packaging material and condition you are presenting. Do not place packaging generated through your trade or business activities in household bins or public bins. Do not take it to a household waste and recycling centre unless the operator expressly accepts business or trade waste and you meet its conditions.
  1. Check authorisation and keep the right records: Before transferring waste, check that the carrier is registered and that the receiving facility is authorised to accept that type of waste. Complete and retain the waste transfer documentation required in the nation where the waste is produced and managed. For non-hazardous waste in England and Wales, a waste transfer note or another document containing the required information is normally required. Hazardous waste is subject to additional classification, handling and documentation requirements. Requirements differ across the UK, so always use the guidance for the relevant nation.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Packaging from professional work is business waste: Waste created through a commercial activity is business waste. This includes waste produced by tradespeople and contractors while working at a residential property. The business that produces the waste is responsible for ensuring that it is stored, transferred and managed correctly. GOV.UK summarises the position as follows: “Any waste that comes from a commercial activity is business waste.” The statutory Waste Duty of Care Code of Practice for England and Wales also identifies tradespeople, including builders, as waste producers and explains the responsibilities that apply throughout the waste chain.

What is Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging?

Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging, commonly known as packaging EPR, is the UK framework that places responsibilities on organisations which supply or import packaging or packaged goods. Depending on their activities and size, those organisations may need to register, report packaging data, meet recycling obligations and pay fees relating to the management of household packaging waste. The current requirements are set out in the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations 2024, as amended.

Household and Non-Household Packaging

Official EPR guidance explains how producers must assess whether packaging is household or non-household. Primary and shipment packaging is generally treated as household packaging unless specified conditions are met. For packaging supplied through an intermediary, the official criteria include packaging that is both: “for a product designed for use by a business or a public institution only”. The packaging must also not be reasonably likely to be disposed of in a household bin or public bin. All ecorend products are covered by the professional-use notice and are designed for professional tradespeople and businesses. The instruction on the product, its Technical Data Sheet and its product page communicates the intended user and correct commercial disposal route for the empty packaging. Packaging EPR sets responsibilities for packaging producers. It does not replace the separate waste duty of care that applies when a business or tradesperson produces, holds, carries or transfers waste.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I put empty ecorend packaging in a household recycling or general-waste bin? No. Where an ecorend product is used as part of a trade or business activity, its empty packaging is business waste and must be managed through an appropriate commercial waste or recycling service.

What if the product was used at a customer’s home? Waste produced by a tradesperson or contractor while carrying out professional work remains waste from a commercial activity. The contractor should make appropriate arrangements for its collection, transport and disposal rather than leaving it for the customer’s domestic waste collection.

Is empty ecorend packaging recyclable? Packaging may be recyclable through an appropriate commercial collection, depending on its material, condition, residue and the facilities available. The recycling symbol or material type does not guarantee that every waste service will accept it. Separate the packaging as instructed and confirm acceptance with your commercial waste provider.

What should I do if product remains in the packaging? Do not place packaging containing unused product or significant residue into a packaging recycling stream without first checking the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet and your waste contractor’s acceptance criteria. The remaining material may change how the waste must be classified and managed.

Can I take the packaging to a council recycling centre? Household waste and recycling centres are generally provided for household waste. Only use a facility if it expressly accepts business or trade waste, is authorised to accept the relevant waste type and you comply with its documentation and charging requirements.

What records do I need? The requirements depend on the waste classification and UK nation. A transfer of non-hazardous business waste will generally require a waste transfer note or equivalent document containing the required information. Hazardous waste normally requires separate consignment documentation. Follow the current guidance issued by the relevant environmental regulator.

What if I use the product outside the United Kingdom? You must comply with the waste-management, packaging and environmental laws that apply in the country where the product is used, and the packaging becomes waste. UK guidance does not replace local legal requirements.

Does this page replace the product Material Safety Data Sheet? No. This page provides general packaging-waste guidance. Always read the current Technical Data Sheet and Material Safety Data Sheet for the specific product. Product residue and contaminated packaging may require different handling from empty packaging.
