Applying Render Products in Hot Weather: Tips for Success

Applying Render Products in Hot Weather

With any external building product, application in the summer months can pose challenges. Care must be taken to mitigate aesthetic and application issues, ensuring the best results. Here’s a comprehensive guide to applying render products in hot weather:

Hot Weather Working Tips 02 1

Plan Your Work:

  • Timing is Everything: Work early during the cooler temperatures and follow the shade around the building, avoiding direct sunlight and wind.
  • Storage Matters: Store products in a cool area and use cool or iced water when mixing. Let hot water run out of the water supply before using.

Drying Considerations:

  • Prevent Uneven Drying: Differences in drying rates can cause aesthetic issues. Scaffolding, for example, creates shadow lines where the finish dries more slowly. To mitigate this, sheet the exterior to limit uneven sun exposure.

Maintain Sufficient Manpower:

  • Quick Application: Hot weather decreases working times, so ensure enough workers are available to prevent ‘cold’ joints and snap drying.

Base Coats, Monocouche & Thin Coat Render

These products require water to allow the binder to hydrate efficiently. Here’s how to ensure a smooth application:

Pre-Soak the Substrate:

  • Reduce Absorption: Soaking the substrate first reduces water absorption and increases the open time for finishing.

Mist the Surface:

  • Hydrate Properly: Once finished and starting to set, spray the surface with a fine mist of clean, cold water. This replaces evaporated water and allows the binder to hydrate sufficiently, ensuring a fissure-free finish.
  • Repeat Mist Curing: In hot weather, mist the surface every 20 minutes until conditions cool. For very hot periods, mist several times a day for a few days.

Silicone & Acrylic Thin Coat Render Systems

For optimal results with silicone and acrylic thin coat render systems:

  • Preparation: Always use a primer before applying the render.
  • Add Water: Mix thoroughly, adding 5% clean water per tub.
  • Time Management: Finish the product within 5 to 15 minutes of application to avoid a closed and uneven appearance.
